Theme & Variations

Theme and variation is a form in music where the piece begins with a theme that is the main melody. That is followed by variations of that melody which are similar to the theme but different enough that they do not repeat the melody exactly.

For this show, I worked with a small number of photographs (almost all of the same pair of buildings) that I took in the Old Street neighborhood of London. These pictures formed the “melody” of the exhibit; the artworks were the variations. These included two and three dimensional works, including lenticulars, collage, and sculptural artist books.

In the Gallery

The show included lenticulars, sculptural artist books, collage, print assemblages, even a mobile. My thanks to the great staff at the gallery for help hanging the show and the excellent lighting.

Old Street Vertical #2

16x4x.5 (closed) Unique. Printed on Epson Enhanced Matte with an Epson 3880 inkjet printer.

This book is in the form of an accordion book with three layers of pages. There are cut outs in the top layer with pop-ups from the second layer coming up through the cut outs. This image shows one layer of the book and pictures used making the book. I call the form "CO-PO" book for Cut Out- Pop Up. I don't know if I can claim the form as original to me; it is a logical step from other concertina forms.

Old Street Improvisations

6.25x6.25x1 (closed). Variable edition limited to 4 copies begun 2017. (Currently, have been 2 copies.) In folded slipcase. Printed on Epson Enhanced Matte & Pictorico Kenaf Unryu papers with an Epson 3880 printer.

This book is, basically, a circular star book but uses five bases. The slipcase is in a form folded from one sheet of paper, as taught by Hedi Kyle. This book has been juried into three exhibition and won an award at one show.

Old Street Canon 152 #2

This is one of a pair of lenticulars using these images. As you walk by, the building appears to flip to the other side.

This shows what the lenticular looks like before it is folded.
